This is the category that matters most for our readers. We tested both VPNs against 25 streaming platforms over a four-week period in March 2026. Our methodology involves testing each platform from at least three different servers per region, at different times of day, and confirming that actual content plays (not just that the homepage loads).

Netflix

NordVPN unblocked all 8 Netflix regions we tested -- US, UK, Canada, Japan, Australia, Germany, France, and South Korea. Every US server we tried worked on the first attempt, and the non-US libraries were equally reliable. Content played in full quality with no buffering.

Surfshark unblocked 6 out of 8 Netflix regions. US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, and Japan all worked, but we experienced intermittent blocks with the French and South Korean libraries. Disney+

Both VPNs performed well with Disney+. NordVPN and Surfshark unblocked Disney+ in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia without issues. Neither experienced any blocks during our testing period. Live content and on-demand worked equally well on both services.

BBC iPlayer

This is where the gap becomes clear. NordVPN's SmartPlay technology consistently bypassed BBC iPlayer's aggressive VPN detection. Nine out of ten UK servers worked on the first attempt during our testing.

Surfshark struggled. Only about half of its UK servers successfully accessed iPlayer, and we frequently encountered the "not available in your area" error.
